Tips for positive co-parenting

If you are a divorced parent in Virginia, you may have experienced challenges when working with your former husband or wife regarding child-related issues. This can happen no matter how long you have been divorced. If you are in the midst of a divorce, you may well be facing struggles about day-to-day parenting topics as well as your larger child custody arrangement. How can you make these situations more bearable and more positive for you and your children?

It is understandable that co-parenting with a former spouse or partner is difficult. But, it is also important for your kids and for you to reduce conflict. Fortunately, there are some things you can to facilitate this goal. When it comes to communicating with your children’s other parent, MindBodyGreen recommends that substantial conversations should never take place when you are exchanging your kids or even in the children’s presence. Setting up a separate time when each of you can talk freely is better. All conversations should be kept polite. If a particular discussion starts to become heated, simply request that you continue it at a later time. This will allow time for emotions to settle.

Despite the fact that you may no longer love your ex, you should proactively encourage the love between your ex and your children. Doing this promotes healthy parental bonds that benefit your children in many ways. It is also a great way of making sure that your children’s needs are primary and that can help direct other actions appropriately.
