How can I help my preschooler through my divorce?

If you are getting divorced and have very young children, you no doubt have a lot of questions about how to properly care for them during this transition. Like other parents in Virginia, you will want to make sure that your efforts are age-appropriate as well as targeted to the individual personalities of your children.

As Today’s Parent explains, kids under the age of five have little to no ability to process their own emotions or to understand future concepts let alone complex situations like divorce. For this reason, you will need to refrain from lengthy discussions about fears, being upset and similar things. Instead, one of the most helpful things you can do for your youngsters is to maintain as much stability and routine as possible.

If your three-year-old generally has a bath at 7:30 and is in bed by 8:00, make sure that continues. If you are the one who usually picks your four-year-old up from preschool, keep doing that. Certainly some things will shift as you and your spouse need to share time but try to phase in changes rather than usher them in all at once. You can get a sense of how well your children are adjusting by their behaviors. If you notice that they whine more often or are less comfortable being separated from you, that may be an indicator of their challenges keeping up with the changes.
